Today I sat down with our designer Jessica Balyck and asked some questions to gain further insight into what makes Balyck a unique label and her personal influences and passions.
What is your favourite holiday destination?
Capri, Italy. Its beauty is radiant and is an island of inspiration. I love going there on holiday, as I am relaxed and inspired all at once.
What is advice you would give to your younger-self?
Simply, be patient.
How did you start?
I originally started studying fashion at Ultimo, doing the Advanced Diploma of Fashion. However prior to my studies and travelling I would collect jewellery from my trips and dismantle them to make more unique pieces that then also represented memories. While studying fashion I realised I had a hobby for designing jewellery for friends and myself, and had more patience and found with time that key to success is combining something you love, persistence, passion and patience so I decided to concentrate on designing jewellery.
What inspires you?
Creating pieces that make people feel confident and that will also one day become a fond memory to them as my designs are to me.
What are your goals for the company?
Short: Expand throughout Australia and continue to support other Australian businesses keeping the label in house.
Long: Expand globally and be recognised as an Australian household label.
How do you balance work and your private life?
Majority of time I’m always working, as I’m passionate about my work. However family time for me is what keeps a beautiful balance whilst also being able to draw inspiration from them, as they’re around me daily whilst also helping to give me an outside perspective. Being an entrepreneur you don't have an off button so I then tend to travel to then relax whilst drawing inspiration for new designs.
What is behind the Balyck name?
Balyck is actually my last name. I’ve always been very fond of it as I identify with it personally however the reason as to why I chose it for the label was because I was fortunate to grow up with a loving father who did everything for the family. Also in our home its all girls and a constant comment in our house was how sad it was that one day my sister and I would be married and we would lose the family name. So I made the executive decision to name the label Balyck. So I could keep my name forever and also make my father proud after a lifetime of him devoting his life to us. And proud he is it was well worth it as every time he sees the label featured in a magazine or TV his face lights up and I really do think that above all is priceless.
What does your day look like?
My day is broken into segments, because as a creative we tend to get bored quickly. The first thing I do when I wake up after coffee of course, is I respond to emails and enquiries. I like to do that personally as its important above else to have a strong relationship with your clients. Next with my wonderful team we then organize packages to be shipped out. After that the team and I concentrate on social media/ marketing for the label. This includes new concept trends and building content for the following weeks. Lastly with the remainder of the day I finish off orders and then will work on new collections or one-off designs.
How would you describe your company?
The Balyck brand is an Exclusive handmade label that encourages individuality and concentrates on a niche market of people that appreciate unique timeless designs that steer away from mass production.
What does Balyck Jewellery look forward to?
Accomplishing my set of goals for the brand, because by doing that I know I’ll also be inspiring others to do the same.
What is the best advice you’ve been given?
Be persistent and always surrounded yourself with people you can learn from. There is always room for improvement.
Who is your favourite designer that inspires you?
My Favourite designer is Alexander McQueen. When he was in charge I loved his ability to not conform and to create new fashion as a genuine innovator.
When did you realise this is what you wanted to do?
In all honesty, probably since I was a little girl. I was always creating, making and decorating and drawn to the fashion world. Often stating that one day I will run a well-known label.
Most meaningful jewellery piece you own?
My grandmother's ring that i wear everyday. She was my biggest fan and best friend.
Do any of the pieces mean anything to you and what was the reason why they were created?
All designs and collection’s have personal sentiment to me. They derive from things places or people who inspire me that are then transformed into designs.
Take for instance the Absolem collection. “Absolem” being the caterpillar from Alice in wonderland was my favourite movie growing up. All the designs in this collection are changeable, being reflective of the caterpillar and its ability to transform and change into a butterfly. Also emphasising the movies core of “nothing is what it seems”.
What is a trend you dislike?
There is no particular trend I dislike, the only thing I don’t like in particular is when people follow trends to fit in instead of following their personal style.
What is your team like?
I have an amazing team and network that are very supportive of one another. Everyone that is apart of the team has their own strengths and when combined together it creates a great brand front. I’m extremely grateful for the amazing people I work with, as you’re only as strong as the people who support you.
What do you believe is the key to success?
Persistence, patience and passion. I believe if you combine those three qualities you will succeed in whatever you do. Also your belief in yourself. If you believe so will others.
Is there a new collection on the way?
Yes there is and I’m very excited to share it with everyone, as the inspiration is very personal to me so I hope everyone will love it. There will also be a new element introduced so I’m very excited for the launch.
What jewellery do you like to wear?
My style changes everyday but I love pieces that are simple, that I can layer and are easy to wear. However for the evening or important events I like to wear a statement piece (earrings or a necklace) that does the speaking on behalf as me.
